"In a remote corner of northeastern India, in Assam, on one of the world’s largest river islands, lie monasteries that have long remained inaccessible. The monks of Majuli Island, mostly farmers, have a lifestyle reminiscent of the middle ages. These astonishingly beautiful monks are above all artists, magnificent dancers who create enchanting performances. For their day to day life in this world apart, they have created their own system of social organization based on family. An adult monk adopts a child of around six years of age, whom he cares for and raises, while at the same time looking after the elderly “father" who raised him. Ecological problems are threatening the existence of these little-known monasteries, due to severe land erosion. With discretion and sensitivity, we will share the lives and secrets of these men and their extraordinary femininity".
