Bhutan, the Birth of a Democracy
Synopsis
In 2008, Bhutan, until then considered to be an absolute monarchy, becomes a parliamentary democracy, as willed by its king. Between now and the elections, the people of Bhutan will learn the workings of a democratic system. What is their reaction? How do they view the future of Bhutan? What is the real meaning of democracy? Presenting a potpourri of people representing different components of Bhutanese society, the film’s goal is to paint a portrait of a world in transition, in a country that had deliberately remained closed for years, inspired by the king’s slogan: “let us develop a veritable national happiness”.
