The valley of bricks
The valley is full of smoke… it’s like being down a mine. This smoking valley is feeding the expansion of Kathmandu. The capital is exploding in all directions, and its already sprawling tentacles are getting ready to explode still further. New offices are needed to satisfy its thirst for expansion, and new buildings are going up everywhere. Buildings need bricks. And small children have come to make them, from India for the most part. That’s the way it happens here. The valley of bricks is their playground, and their purgatory. Some complain, some are dreaming of other places, others simply have no choice… What interests me here is the daily lives of the young men of the valley of bricks … How they organize themselves, how they work, eat and sleep, and how they eventually manage to find their place.
