Mustang: The Kingdom of Peasant Painters
Synopsis
The kingdom of the Mustang is a land which takes your breath away. Red canyons and cave complexes in the middle of a high altitude desert with the roof of the world as the backdrop.
A people of farmer-merchants have lived for over a millennium in a rich palette of colours and extraordinary light. Between them they share the culture of their lands and journey between the mountains and Indian villages where they trade in winter.
Long closed to foreigner due to its proximity to Chinese Tibet, the treasures of this kingdom were only discovered ten years ago.
Luigi Fieni, a renowned Italian painter of sacred art was put in charge of restoring the temple paintings of the capital. There he met exceptional men and women, with incredible freedom of movement, living in harmony with the seasons and adapting to the changes in their society in a remarkable fashion. Faced with the enormity of the challenge, he had the idea of asking for their help. From simple farmers, he turned them into artists, as they gradually rediscovered another world, the culture of their ancestors. A crazy idea turned out to be the most beautiful adventure not just for Luigi but especially for the 40 or so Mustangi men and women. Following the rhythm of the seasons, we tell the story of this unique human experience as the Mustang changes along with these peasant painters’ lives.
